Our Team

Dr. Susan Rohrer

Dr. Rohrer was born and raised in Texas. She graduated from high school in Houston. Her college alma mater is Texas A&M from which she holds three degrees. Dr. Rohrer graduated from veterinary school in 1992. While a student at Texas A&M, she met her husband – Gary. Gary grew up in Illinois but moved to Texas to attend A&M for his masters and Ph.D. Gary’s employment brought the couple to Nebraska in 1991.

The Rohrers live on a farm south of town. It is fully animal stocked with two horses (Amber & Shorty), Molly the lab cross dog, Queenie the one-eyed house cat, a small herd of cows, Flemish Giant rabbits, Satin rabbits, sheep, Silkie & Serama chickens, and 2 barn cats, Bob & Penguin.

They have three children that are all in college.  While at home, the kids were active in 4H – showing sheep, rabbits and poultry. They were also in FFA in High School.  The kids were in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts & they each achieved the highest rank possible:  Eagle Scout and Gold Award. The Rohrers were blessed with a daughter-in-law in 2021.

When Dr. Rohrer finds some quiet time, she enjoys reading, cooking/baking, & playing the piano. She actively volunteers with her church and is a member of the Clay Center Community Club, NVMA and AVMA. In the past, she has been a 4H leader, Spring Wing Ding Chairman, a Girl Scout leader and was very active in Boy Scouts.

Frequently, she speaks to groups and schools about veterinary medicine and gives tours of her clinic. Dr. Rohrer and Clay Center Critter Care continuously provide humane society work for the local area: periodic spay/neuter clinics, stray animal placement assistance, and annual vaccine clinics.  In conjunction with Daisy’s Darlings Animal Rescue, Critter Care provides Free/reduced cost spays and neuters for residents of Clay County.

“Critter Care is my place to care for the pets of this area. The bond between each owner and pet is extremely special. I try daily to preserve the health of each pet so that they can continue to be all that their owners need: friend, lap warmer, companion, helper, listener, competitor, playmate, or smile-maker….nourishing their owner’s lives while enjoying the best quality of life possible.’

Carmen

Carmen began her career with Critter Care before she even left high school. Carmen’s Girl Scout Gold award helped Dr. Rohrer open Critter Care in 1995. Realizing her love for animals, Carmen went on to graduate from Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, NE in 2000. With her Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology and a minor in business, Carmen not only is a Vet Tech, but she is also the clinic’s office manager.

Carmen and her husband Terry have three children. All are active 4-H members and enjoy showing their horses and participating in the Shooting Sports Club. The family has several horses, dogs, and cats. Carmen is a local Girl Scout leader, a Pampered Chef Consultant and a Lilla Rose consultant. She enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, cooking, and camping.

Jakki

Jakki joined the Critter Care team in May 2021. She graduated Nebraska College or Technical Agricultural in 2012 with a Veterinary Technology Systems degree. She passed the VTNE December 2023 making her a LVT! She grew up with a lot of pocket pets & exotic animals like Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Rabbits and Hedgehogs as well as cats and dogs, so her love for furry and spiny animals runs deep. She was active in Holt County 4-H growing up and loved shadowing at her local Vet Clinic in Atkinson, NE. She met her husband Derrick in 2011 and was married in August 2014. They now have three sons, Ryker, Rixten & Ryley and have 1 cat, 1 dog, & 2 rabbits where they live in Oak, NE

Brittney

Brittney was born in Hastings and raised in the Clay Center Community. She graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 2011 and attended college in Hastings. Brittney began working as an office assistant for Critter Care in 2021 after running a local daycare for 2 years. She and her husband, David, returned to Clay Center in 2015 and live with their 3 children, Harper, Thea, and Keithen. The family also has 3 dogs, Abby, Scout & Zac and 2 cats, Tiger Lily & Emi. Brittney enjoys kayaking, reading, puzzles, card games and getting together with her family.

Hannah

Hannah was born in Pennsylvania before moving around finding a home in Nebraska. Hannah is an Approved Veterinary Assistant through NAVTA and graduated from Curtis with an Animal Husbandry degree. Around the clinic, Hannah helps with taking care of the surgery room including carefully putting the packs together, keeping everything stocked among other tasks.

While her favorite animal may be penguins, her favorite pet is her cat Mittens. Sure she may enjoy dance routine workouts through beach body and video gaming, but her favorite activity is writing stories while cuddling with one of the many animals in the house.

Tipsy

Tipsy is our greeter. So far she has never met a stranger. Therefore, many clients have met her. In 2010, she was just 1.8# and very sick. Today, she is a sleek black kitty tipping the scale at 8.7#!
Tipsy has a loud meow and she talks all the time. She loves to rub on dogs, finds perching on shoulders like a parrot her favorite place and finds “tipping” things off desks quite entertaining!

Dooley

Dooley is our most recent addition. He is of unknown age. He adopted us! His claim to fame is how much he will eat. He constantly begs for canned food. He has found a sleeping spot on Dr. Rohrer’s desk.
